My name is Paul and I'm a baseball fan. I
follow the Yankees because they're my window
--- my link --- through which I enjoy the game,
but it is the game itself that intrigues. If I was
born in a small town out west, maybe I'd say
that the Mariners are my window, but I was
born in Massena, New York. Bid McPhee was
also born in Massena. He was enshrined in the
Hall of Fame in 2000. Played over a hundred
years ago. Without a glove mostly.
Anyway. First of all, as kids, we are
players. Years later, after we stop playing, we
become managers and general mangers. Not
always good ones, mind you, but that's what
we become. We make moves all the time (or
would if we could). This season alone, I've
gotten rid of Giambi about 3 times, but I've
also signed him for next year, too. If I really
had to decide one way or another, I'd probably
let him walk. Of the 5 tools, Giambi has only
'hits for power'. Players need more than 1
tool. If their team is going to win, at least.
Catch, throw, run, hit and hit for power.
So we become general managers at some
point. Watching the game, observing
tendencies, studying this and that. And making
decisions on players. Usually after bad losses
(or just as bad seasons). And it's all harmless, in
the end. You can't really release someone 3
times in 1 year.
That Really, Really Long Building in Baltimore

Babe Ruth was born in it, or worked in it, or something. Maybe
all three. At 1,016 feet, it's the longest building on the east coast.
